Privacy Policy

Last Updated: June 15, 2024

Our Privacy Pledge

At Next Chapter, we believe that student privacy is a fundamental right. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of data protection and transparency. We do not sell student data, and we do not use student data for behavioral advertising.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the minimum amount of information necessary to provide our educational services:

  • Account Information: Name, email address, and role (student, teacher, or admin).
  • Student Performance Data: Reading attempts, responses to questions, time spent on tasks, and skill mastery metrics.
  • User Preferences: Settings such as font size, text-to-speech preferences, and dyslexia-friendly font toggles.
  • Classroom Data: Classroom names and student enrollment links managed by teachers.

2. AI and Data Processing

Our platform uses Generative AI (GenAI) to provide supportive coaching and feedback. Here is how that data is handled:

  • AI processing is used to generate encouraging feedback for student responses.
  • We do not use student-identifiable data to train global AI models.
  • All AI interactions are filtered for educational safety and age-appropriateness.

3. Data Security

We implement robust technical and organizational measures to protect your information. This includes end-to-end encryption for data in transit and industry-standard encryption for data at rest. Access to data is strictly limited to authorized personnel and is provided only on a "need-to-know" basis for maintenance and support.

4. Transparency & Control

We believe you should have control over your data:

  • Access: Users (and parents/teachers of minor students) can request access to their personal data.
  • Deletion: Accounts and associated data can be deleted upon request, subject to school data retention policies.
  • Portability: Teachers can export classroom performance data for school reporting.

5. Compliance

Next Chapter is designed to be compliant with major educational privacy laws, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We work closely with schools and districts to ensure all implementation meets local and federal requirements.
